3D printed slides vs EVA foam slides
EVA foam slides are molded from a closed-cell foam: light, inexpensive and made in large batches. 3D printed slides use an open lattice printed from an elastomer: they breathe better and can be firmer or softer in different zones, but they cost more and are usually made to order.
Side-by-side
| EVA foam slide | 3D printed lattice slide | |
|---|---|---|
| How it is made | Injection or compression molded | Printed layer by layer |
| Structure | Closed-cell foam, solid surface | Open lattice of struts |
| Airflow | Low; air does not pass through the sole | High; air and water pass through |
| Zoned cushioning | Limited to separate molded parts | Built into one part by varying the lattice |
| Glue and seams | Often none for one-piece slides | None for one-piece prints |
| Unit cost | Low at volume | Higher; printing time per pair |
| Production | Large batches, stock | Often made to order |
| Cleaning | Wipe the surface | Rinse; debris can sit in the lattice |
Cushioning over time
Foam cushions by compressing gas-filled cells. With repeated loading, foam can take a permanent set and feel flatter. A lattice cushions by bending its struts, so how well it keeps its shape depends on the elastomer and the cell design. Our PFL Rebound Index describes one simple way to compare recovery.
Which one fits which use
- Budget, many pairs, simple use: EVA foam.
- Hot weather, wet areas, wanting airflow: an open lattice.
- Wanting different firmness at heel and forefoot: a printed lattice can do this in one part.
